Understanding the world of search engine optimisation, or SEO, can be hard if you are new to the field.
However, Katie Gatto, writing for SEO Chat, has a number of strategies which can help to increase web rankings and avoid the pitfalls of dropping down the list of results.
First off, be discerning about what links are included on your site, says Ms Gatto.
While creating outbound links from your site to another is generally a good thing in the world of SEO, the quality of the sites that you link to can make a big difference in the effect that it has.
Sites that have been penalised for over-linking or which contain adult content are bad news in terms of SEO, as search engines will often recognise them as a dodgy area.
Using a paid link or link trade service to get links for your site can create a similar situation, as most owners of decent and reputable sites prefer to get their links in other ways.
Secondly, Ms Gatto recommends using a few highly relevant keywords naturally in your site, rather than inserting all the slightly-related keywords you can think of as many times possible.
As a rule of thumb, it is best to choose two to three keywords to use in a 300-word piece or five in a longer, 700-word or above piece, she says, adding that keeping keywords extremely relevant increases the likelihood of using words that probably would appear naturally in the piece anyway. Finally, creating original content for your site will pay for itself in terms of SEO, Ms Gatto advises.
Search engines place a high premium on sites having unique content, and using duplicate content, or letting yours be reprinted, reduces the value of your site.
“Letting a site reprint a section with your permission (and a link back) is one thing,” reiterates Ms Gatto, “but reprinting whole pieces is not OK for any reason.”
Ron Jones, board member at Search Engine Marketing Professional Organisation (SEMPO), has also warned against the risks of using duplicate content.
Writing for the blog Search Engine Watch, he notes that search engines tend to filter out any duplicate content and choose one based on certain criteria. And the one that gets picked might not be yours.
To deal with the situation, Mr Jones recommends using a canonical tag, otherwise known as an authoritative page, among a group of pages that have similar content.

The get together was designed to be an early look of what the Norwegian software company intends to show at Computex Taipei 2010 early next month. Håkon Wium Lie, Opera CTO and the father of CSS was there to discuss these topics and for us it was most interesting to hear what Opera thought about Adobe Flash and where it fits in now and in the future. Jon S. von Tetzchner, Opera Co-founder and he had some interesting thoughts on Flash as well. During the presentation, we were shown the new video tag (created by Opera) which is part of CSS3, a W3C style sheet language web standard that will soon be supported by many web browsers. This new video tag allows you to write a very simple line of code to add a video to your website. It will come down to the individual browser makers to add support for CSS3 powered video playback, but clearly Opera is behind it in a big way. It remains to be seen how much other browser makers will embrace it, but Opera is eagerly optimistic that it will be embraced heavily as they are fully behind open web standards and this one in particular in a big way – at least that was the impression that we got today. Page rank, page rank and more page rank. Everybody is speaking about this, but few know how to increase it or what does it means. So I’ll start with the basis.
Definition (quote google): “PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results.
PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. We have always taken a pragmatic approach to help improve search quality and create useful products, and our technology uses the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page’s importance.”
And you’ll say: “yeah right, and what are the most important variables?”.
Looking throughout forums, blogs and lots of internet website I found how chaotic these info are. So I’ve begin testing it myself and trusting only official facts. This is a top that I have made about what really counts (you can find a more subjective look here; look for the vote pool in the left menu):
1) Search Engine Submission. First step should be the submission of your url to the most relevant search engines. Why? Because if the search engine don’t know you exist than no one can find you.
2) Link building. Even from the definition given from google you can see that this is the major factor. The higher the rank of the page that points to you the higher your rank will become, however, every link to your site counts. This link building includes: social bookmarks, blogs, comments, forum posting, directory submission and others that points to your site.
3) Optimize your page, make it search engine friendly. This is also very important. When someone searches for a product/service the search engine will give results based on your keywords relevancy. Don’t over look this! Even if you have a high page rank, a small rank competitive site can show up higher in search results, because it has more relevancies from the point of view of the search engine algorithm. The sitemap, meta description and meta keywords are very important for your website and for any post you make: forum, articles, directories, etc.
4) Receive Traffic. The problem with traffic is a delicate one. Some says that google ads ban people that drive traffic to their website. From an objective point a view, i don’t know how they can do this as long as they are real visitors, they can’t, it doesn’t make any sense! Even more, Alexa it’s using this data to increase the alexa ranking and it’s doing this from years. Also, looking on the internet i found a patent issued by Yahoo that also uses the traffic logs for their search engine rankings.
