Sharpening Your Google AdWords Home Business Campaign Comes With Experience
May 28th
When you find yourself in a position to search out information online, where would you begin your research? I’m guessing you’ve said Google. There is little doubt that Google is the 800 lbs gorilla of search engines – by far one of the most popular and most used web sites worldwide. It’s time for you, as a home based business owner, to fully embrace Google and use what is commonly referred to as the greatest marketing and advertising tool ever created: AdWords.
There are many, many wonderful resources that have been written and published on Google AdWords best practices. So, I am not going to reinvent the wheel in this article. What I would like to do is discuss a number of the AdWords idiosyncrasies I’ve discovered on my own that I have not seen discussed in any other article. These are just things you should be aware of and keep in mind when setting up an AdWords account of your own.
Firstly, I’d just like to mention that becoming proficient in Google AdWords is very similar to becoming a good auto mechanic – you can read all the books and articles you want on AdWords but you’re never going to really learn it or become proficient at it until you roll up your sleeves and get your “hands dirty”.
In the same way a mechanic may have attended school and has read many books on the subject of cars and engines, he’s not an actual mechanic until he gets his hands dirty and actually works on an automobile.
Having said that, here are 4 things I’ve discovered about AdWords only after I’d started using it:
1) Google will not allow “non-standard punctuation” in any of your ads. Non-standard punctuation is described as: tilde (~), asterisk (*) or pipe (|). The funny thing is though, I found this out when I ran an ad that did not contain any of these elements. The ad I tried to run had a headline which read: “Lost Job? So What!”
Although I was not able to see how or where a question mark or exclamation point would be considered “Non-standard punctuation”, I had to change the exclamation point to a period for the ad to be accepted. I’m pretty sure I’ve even seen this exact punctuation in other ads in the past. But, Google occasionally changes their rules so you just need to make sure you’re always operating within acceptable AdWords parameters.
2) Google will not allow excessive punctuation such as multiple exclamation points (!!!). I ran an ad one time with a point I wanted to place great emphasis on and chose to do so with three exclamation points. Doing so violated an AdWords policy and I had to change my ad to reflect a single exclamation point.
3) Including a direct call to action within your ad is a no-no. Statements such as “click here” or “go there now” are not allowed in your ads. You can work around this one by saying something like “details on next page” within the advertisement.
4) When setting up your ad, you will enter both a display web address and a destination web address. The Google user will not see the destination address, they will only see the display web address in your ad. The destination address is where the user will be taken if they click on your link. The display web address must be an actual, working web address.
This may make loads of sense on the surface. After all, why would you ever want to display anything BUT a working web address? Well, consider this: I have a web site I was promoting in one of my AdWords accounts. The actual web address being promoted is www.RidForeclosure.com but, I chose to hyphenate the displayed address just to make it easier for the user to read. I figured it was easier to read www.Rid-Foreclosure.com. Of course, in the event my link was clicked on, the user would’ve been taken to my real web site (address without the hyphen). That all kinda makes sense, doesn’t it?
But, because my actual site address is not hyphenated the ad was rejected. Instead of www.RidForeclosure.com I wanted it to display as www.Rid-Foreclosure.com but Google found this to be unacceptable.
The above are only a few examples of the things I’d learned about Google AdWords that only experience had taught me. That is what I meant when I said earlier that you will only become really proficient with AdWords after you begin using it.
I am sure there may be many other nuances of AdWords that I am not yet familiar with that I’ll discover over time. Plus, Google changes their rules and requirements from time to time so what was OK yesterday may not necessarily be so today.
Setting up a really effective, hard hitting AdWords campaign is as much an art as it is a science. Ongoing education, use and discovery are what I’ve found to be three key components to effectively using my Google AdWords account.
For those who may be intimidated or overwhelmed by it all, you may want to work with a Google AdWords consultant to help you to set up your first account. Consultants offer experience based on a mixture of research, training and, most important, real-world, hands-on experience. They understand their clients’ needs and dispense advice when it’s called for. If you plan to hire a consultant, don’t wait too long. In general, you should provide yourself with as much lead time as possible. The success of your company depends on your readiness to fully embrace and use all of the wonderful technologies we have at our disposal today.
The two things a home based business entrepreneur does not have a disposal amount of are time and money. Use both of these resources wisely, and to your fullest advantage, and watch your business sore to new heights.

The Web 2.0
May 28th
History
The concept of “Web 2.0″ began with a conference brainstorming session between O’Reilly and MediaLive International. Dale Dougherty, web pioneer and O’Reilly VP, noted that far from having crashed the web was more important than ever, with exciting new applications and sites popping up with surprising regularity. What’s more, the companies that had survived the collapse seemed to have some things in common. Could it be that the dot-com collapse marked some kind of turning point for the web, such that a call to action such as “Web 2.0″ might make sense? They agreed that it did, and so the Web 2.0 Conference was born.
The Web as Platform
Like many important concepts, Web 2.0 doesn’t have a hard boundary, but rather, a gravitational core. You can visualize Web 2.0 as a set of principles and practices that tie together a veritable solar system of sites that demonstrate some or all of those principles, at a varying distance from that core.
Web 1.0 vs. Web 2.0 AltaVista vs. Google Hotmail vs. Yahoo Mail Ofoto vs. Flicker Mp3.com vs. iTunes Geocities vs. Blogger MapQuest vs. Google Maps Encarta vs. Wikipedia Netscape vs. Firefox Open Data Open data formats No data lock-in or walled gardens User created data User owns their own data Ability to use data outside the confines of the application Data used across devices Architecture of Participation Providing a service, not a product (infoware not software) Encourage user contribution (reviews, comments) Collective intelligence (Page Rank, folksonomies, popularity) Make it easy to re-use and re-mix Customer self-service Community and sense of ownership Rich User Experience Easy to use Pleasurable to use Build social networks Rich user interface Functions like a traditional application Core Web 2.0 Technologies Open data through API’s and web services RSS Ajax Web Standards (DOM Scripting, XHTML, CSS) Web 2.0 Revolution Using existing technologies in new and innovative ways Change in the way people view the web More mature industry Healthier web economy Need to innovate just to maintain position The Web as a Platform Simplifies distribution Easy way of maintaining code Faster speed to market Share data across devices Subscription model vs. one off purchase

Google Adwords 101

Google Adwords 101
Google is one of the most popular things out there in the Internet. Google dominates the field of search engines. According to a recent study, Google is responsible for generating more than 70% of the clicks to web pages that are searched through search engines.
Google has also devised a way to be able to put Internet marketing through a whole different level. Because of its market dominance, it has the capability to be able to set up a new pay-per-click system which aims at matching sellers and buyers. Google has developed what is not referred to as the Google Adwords.
What is Google Adwords?
Google Adwords is one of the most promising advertising opportunities that abound in the Internet arena. It is a pay-per-click system that advertises websites which have the highest bids for a certain search word or phrase.
If one would look at the window of an Internet browser and search something on the Google search engine, he will notice a section containing “sponsored links” at the right-hand side of the screen. These are the Adwords advertisements. These are websites which pay to be shown whenever a certain phrase or word is searched through Google.
Bidding
Business bid for their preferred keywords when they use the Adwords system. For example, a business that is engaged in selling laptops may opt to bid for search phrases such as “laptops for sale” “cheap notebooks” if they are applicable to their products.
Bidding in the Google Adwords system to get the prime spots is primarily based on two factors: the click-thru-rate and the amount of the bid. The amount of the bid will depend on the bidder himself. Bids can go as low as a nickel per click up to fifty dollars per click. The bidder must know how much to spend because the system charges the bidding price whenever the website is clicked through the Adwords system. Another factor is the click-thru-rate, or the rate by which people are clicking the website. Usually, the top three sites that are shown on the Adwords screen are the most popular and have the highest bids.
How to Engage in Adwords
If one is looking into using the Google Adwords system as an advertising tool, he can read the guidelines and the terms of conditions through the Google website. There are a few steps which we could tackle on how to start using Google Adwords.
The first step is account creation. Google will guide you through this process. However, there are several things that one should take into consideration when creating an account. He should take into mind the different strategies that he would want to employ right from the start in terms of the selection of key words and the combinations of these words to be able to maximize the returns from engaging in this endeavor.
He should also target the right market in terms of selecting the right language and countries which he would want his ads to appear. If one is selling products which would be of no use for citizens of other countries or if the option of exporting the products is not available, he might as well stick with his own country. He wouldn’t want to get charged by generating clicks from people who do not belong to the target market.
The creation of an Adgroup is also a basic step in using the Google Adwords system. One should be able to conceptualize and design an enticing advertisement and select the right combination of keywords.
Advertisements
Google will ask an advertiser what he would want to put in his advertisements. The advertisement should contain a title line and a body. The title line is composed of a maximum of 25 characters and the body should contain a maximum of two lines which contain 35 characters each.
The real challenge in designing advertisements for Google Adwords is to effectively attract customers and get them to click the website. A concise but striking advertisement is particularly efficient in getting the attention of the surfers.
Links
When a prospective customer clicks a website through the Google Adwords screen, a continuous set of efforts should be taken. The link in the Adword should not necessarily be the home page of a website but should be a web page wherein he can find information that is important to him. The link, perhaps, can be the “products” section of the website.
These are just some of the basic things that one must be able to digest to get a general feel of what Google Adwords is all about. One must be diligent in studying the different aspects of this system to be able to get the most out of it.

Effectively Using Contextual Link Building To Get On Top
May 28th
Everybody wants to get up in the top ten search results on Google and other major search engines. To get targeted, quality back links to your website is one of the ways in which you can improve your standing with search engines. There are a number of link building strategies that one can make use of in order to boost their link popularity. Contextual link building is one of the most powerful methods.
The effectiveness of contextual link building however depends on how you make use if it. Basically, the strategy of link building involves getting back links to your website combined with the benefits of keyword targeting.
So what’s the big idea?
The idea behind contextual link building is to receive inbound links from other websites and blogs to your website. The web pages that you link to however should be topically or contextually related to your website. Furthermore they should be popular and heavily promoted having a fan following of their own. The PR of the web pages that will contain back links to your website has a profound effect on the effectiveness of the strategy. The more popular they are the more link juice they will be able to draw to your website. This is why professional SEO companies have a blog network of popular blogs that receive direct traffic of their own. Posting blog reviews with back links to your website on such blogs will get you direct targeted traffic.
Getting it in writing
You will be required to get some high quality informative blog reviews in writing. These should be based on your keyword topics because it is within these blog reviews that a link back to your website will be placed. It is important to pay due diligence to the writing of blog posts as it has to appeal to the masses in a manner that intrigues them to click on the web link. Professional SEO companies can help you with the writing of high quality blog reviews that will captivate the readers and drive traffic to your website.
Balancing it out
The benefits of contextual link building are many but let it be clear that webmasters should not rely on this strategy of link building alone. Rather, in order rank in the top ten sites of search engine results you need to back up your contextual link building efforts with other link building strategies.
Other methods that can be used to compliment contextual link building are
* Article marketing
* Directory submissions
* Forum posting etc.
The use of all these link building strategies should be nicely balanced so as to pave a smooth way to the top for your website. When it comes to contextual link building, the posting of unique well written blog reviews should span over a time period of up to a month. The number of blogs that you should be posting up in a month can range from twenty to sixty. The new content will attract the search engines while spacing it out will give the search engines the impression of a slow and natural link building thereby paving the way to success for your website.
