Search engine optimization, also known as SEO, is simply adding certain design and content elements to your website, blog, and/or RSS feed to make it more attractive to search engines.
If you are interested in generating traffic for your website, blog, or RSS feed then you must spend some time working on SEO. Of course, you can ignore SEO and depend on other methods of traffic generation but this can be very expensive and time-consuming. Of course, SEO can be expensive and time consuming as well but if it is done right it will not only enhance the appearance, usability, and usefulness of your site, blog or feed in the short run it will also increase traffic and revenue in the long run.
Search engine traffic is the best source of long-term free traffic. If you are looking to attract visitors to your new online store featuring dog sweaters then obtaining a good listing on Yahoo could deliver 1800 visitors searching for dog sweaters and another 2000 searching for some other variation of key words including dog sweater. Google could deliver even more and MSN could make a healthy contribution as well.
If you ignore SEO then you will still get some search engine traffic, especially if you employ other marketing efforts, but it will be a paltry trickle compared to the flood of visits you could receive from proper SEO. Taking some time to ensure your site is properly optimized for search engines will eventually result in higher rankings for the search terms you target with your SEO efforts. All search engines have a set of rules, often referred to as algorithms, that are used to judge the importance, also known as rank, of a web page for a specific word or phrase, also known as keyword. Software robots called spiders continually “crawl” the web and report back to search engines with the results. Once your site has been crawled by a search engine, the site will be included in that engine’s index of websites and eventually ranked according to the individual search engine’s rules.
Obviously you want your site, blog or feed to be spidered, indexed, and ranked quickly but it is best to have your site optimized before it is spidered as once it is indexed and ranked you may need to wait for a return visit to register the improvements. It is OK, and even desirable, to continue to add to and improve your site after it is spidered but you should wait to attract the spiders until after your site is ready.
There is a great deal of misinformation regarding how to get your pages spidered and indexed quickly by the search engines. You could spend a great deal of time and money chasing down the secret tools and tips that abound, but there really isn’t a secret. Some search engines provide a facility that you can use to submit your site details to them, but this method often takes a lot of time to work. The fastest and most effective way is to have a highly ranked website, preferably one related to your site’s topic, provide a link back to your site. When the spiders crawl the highly ranked site, which may happen every day or at least within a week, they will find your link. Spiders discovering your link on a prominent site will temporarily classify your site as important and follow the link to crawl your site.
The factors that influence a website’s rank within a search engine index are closely guarded secrets and the rules frequently change. Just to make things even more complicated the factors vary from search engine to search engine.While you can spend a great deal of time and money studying SEO there are many free articles and discussion groups available but concentrating on a few simple issues will likely produce the results you need without further investigation.
Content is king when it comes to search engine optimization. Your site should have several pages of original content centered around the primary topic of your site. Pages or blog posts should have at least 200 words. Regularly adding pages or posts will keep your site relevant and interesting to search engines as well as visitors.
Don’t overlook the use of tags within your site as well. These tags include meta tags, title, header and anchor tags. Your key words and phrases should be reflected in these tags as well as the content you place on your site.
Search engine optimization is an important part of internet marketing but it doesn’t have to as complex and expensive as some folks make it out to be. If you generate a clean, attractive site with unique and relevant content then the search engines will like it. If the search engines like it then they will tell their visitors and your traffic will rise.

When you are maintaining your own website, website marketing is most probably one of the biggest things that you worry about. A website can only be as effective as the marketing that you put into it and one of the most effective yet least expensive way that you can market your website is through link building.
In its most basic form, link building is simply you asking someone else to put up a link to your website in their website. By reciprocation, you could also add a link to that someone’s website to your website as well.
The main purpose of link building is to encourage people who visit a website to follow a link for another website with, presumably, related content to the one they were last on. In the contemporary sense, link building is analogous to how doctors refer a patient to other doctors for the purpose of medicine and health.
In terms of cost, link building is ideally free. The main thinking behind link building is to increase the exposure of your website. So, you approach another website, probably one whose products and services complement your products and services, and ask him or her to put up a link in his website to yours. In return, he or she also asks for you to put up a link in your website pointing to his or her website. The net effect of this would be that visitors to his or her website can potentially visit your website through the link he or she provided in his or her website. Your visitors can also potentially link to his or her website via the same process. It is a win-win scenario which a lot of websites have employed time and again with great success.
Because of the nature of link building, it would be more beneficial for you if your link is placed in a website where a huge traffic is generated daily. A huge traffic translates to an increased possibility that a person browsing from that web page will link to yours. Thus, it is best if you can link build towards a large website with a large volume of traffic. One drawback to this is that, since the website is already established and enjoys a lot of online prestige, there is a possibility that they would ask for a fee in exchange for putting up a link to your site.
Of course, when you are link building, try to link build only to websites who have complementary content with yours. This would be the practical way to go. Thus, if you are selling computers, then you would be well served if you added a link to a web page whose product is computer tables.
Finally, you can enhance your link building options by making sure that you conform to the online adage that content is king. Thus, make sure that your website has interesting and engaging content. This will increase interest in your website, make more people constantly visit your website and also increase your likelihood of receiving link building requests thus increasing your website’s exposure.

If you have now, or have ever had a website, then you may already know the importance of link building. This is not an easy task, and can take lots of time to accomplish. Link building is simply finding other websites with the same or similar niche as yours, and providing them a link to your site, normally in exchange for a link from theirs. You place the link to their site on your link page, and they reciprocate.
There is a practice of buying link placement. You can find really good page ranking sites, and pay them for the opportunity to place your link on their site. On the other hand, if your site has good page ranking with the major search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, you can charge a nice piece of change to allow sites to link to yours. It’s a merry-go-round of links here and there, but ultimately it is one of the most important practices that you will face when building your websites reputation and ranking.
Let’s look at page ranking for a moment. There are many steps involved in receiving a high page ranking, meaning that when someone searches for a keyword that’s associated with your site, your site would preferably be listed in the first 5 pages of the search results. Factors to determine page ranking are based on many things, including keywords, content, and incoming links. If you have links from highly popular sites, that are within your niche, then you will ultimately receive a higher page ranking. The key is to not have too many links, and never place links on your site that have absolutely nothing to do with what your site is about. Search engines do not like link farms. Simply put, a link farm is a page that is filled from header to footer, and everywhere in between with links from wherever you can find them. For instance, you don’t want a link from a coffee site if your site is about animals. Get the picture? Your links need to be of the highest quality, and must have something in common with the overall niche of your website.
Now, you know what you need, let’s talk about how to get it. One way to build up your incoming links is to scour the web and look for sites that have similar content to yours. In a lot of instances, you’ll see an invitation at the bottom of the page, inviting you to be a link partner. Send the site administration an email asking for a link exchange. Then you’ll need to get their linking information and give them yours. Simply place the link on your link page, and you’re finished. Now, you’ll have to do this for every link that you want, so it can be very time consuming.
Another way is to join a linking community. Linking exchange sites such as
www.linkexchange, provide software that you can use to interact with other site owners within your niche. You simply sign up for their program, and you can look for the links you want. You still have to reciprocate by placing links on your site, but it could save you time by not having to search for other sites that offer similar products or services as yours.
Another good way to build your link page is to use a program such as 000links. 000links.com is a site that uses a triangular link building technology. You simply sign up, and the program is free, and set up a campaign, and then you automatically receive links daily. You don’t actually link to the sites that link to yours, but you do have sites linking to you. It’s set up so that you only receive links that are related to your sites content and niche. So while you are still exchanging links, in a sense, you’re not “swapping” links. It makes your links more unique, and search engines find it much harder to see your links as “exchanges”. Unique links are higher in value than reciprocal links, so this is a good system, simply because the search engines see your site as more important, if you have one-way links.
So, you see, link building can be time consuming, or you can try out programs such as 000links.com and let them do it for you.
The main point is that links are important if you want your site to rank higher with major search engines. It will ultimately be your preference in how you build your link page, but just remember that you do need to build it somehow.
