3. Create multiple content pages. Make a separate page for each important keyword and key phrase. If, for example, you want your site to come up for the key phrases web consulting, web design, and search engine optimization, make three separate pages. Create a web page for each major keyword. Don’t create automated pages just to get search engine exposure. To keep visitors at your site, you have to give them good content. Keyword-rich articles are a good way to optimize your pages for search engines while providing useful content to your visitors.
4. Optimize each content page for ONE of your key phrases. Put your targeted key phrases in your content. Include them in your page title, description tag, ALT image tags, comment tags, and in internal and external links. When providing a title and description in the META tags, your listing may be displayed in the search engine listing as you provide it. Make your titles and descriptions informative and compelling to attract potential buyers to your site. Provide a benefit or solve a problem.
5. Put your keywords in your content. Search engines are looking at how often your keyword appears on a page. That’s how they determine relevancy. Short pages provide a larger percentage of keywords and are better for search engine optimization. The keyword density of a Web page is important for search engine optimization. How often you should mention your keyword throughout the text is different for each search engine, but it varies between 3% and 5% of your text. In other words, use your keyword 3-5 times for every 100 words on your page.
6. Naming files and directories. Put important keywords in all file names and directories/folder names describing the content. For example, to promote ebook covers, I name my files ebook-covers.html, cd-covers.html, box-cover.html, etc.
7. Naming graphics. The search bots don’t see your graphics but they can see the description of your graphics and navigation buttons in ALT tags (alternative text describing your images for visitors who browse your site with the images turned off). If your navigation links are images, I recommend that you provide text links in addition to the image links for search engine optimization.
8. Navigation. Have your main navigation links on your home page so search engines can follow your links and index your pages. This is just as important for your visitors as for the search engines.
9. Link your pages together. You can easily link to all your pages by creating a sitemap.
10. Directory structure. Put your important files in the first level. Subdirectories that lie deep are more difficult for search engines to scan. Creating a sitemap for large sites and providing a link to your sitemap on your home page is a good way to get all your important pages indexed.

In a web world of “me too” web sites, products and services, nothing is more exciting than something totally unique. The side benefit is that people will search for keywords that belong only to you – think “Macintosh,” or “iPod.” Before Apple invented the products and made the words “Macintosh” and “iPod” into household names, how many people would have searched for those words?? Nobody, except maybe the creative people at Apple. Create a web site that reflects your uniqueness. Create a unique theme and you will boldly stand out from the zillions of other sites on the Internet. Plus, that way you will never have to try and obtain in-bound links – you will become a link magnet automatically!
2. Killer Keyword Research
Simply put, nothing else in SEO matters if you don’t get the foundation of your SEO right from the get-go. The foundation of all great SEO is made up of excellent Keyword research and selection. Along with this, never aim for highly competitive keywords when optimizing a site. Use the “long tail” approach and go for a wider reach. If you are in a niche market or your keywords are not highly competitive, then go for the targeted keyword selection approach. If not, go broad in your selection of keywords.
3. Hot Damn Keyword-Rich Anchor Text and Domain Names
Use keyword-rich domain names. And again, uniqueness here will pay off hugely. Keep the depth of the path shallow. This means, don’t bury web pages too deep. Here’s a good rule of thumb: if a user has to click more than three times to get to the relevant content within your web site, it’s buried too deep.
By the way, if you do use keywords in the domain or filename, separate them with hyphens or underscores – it makes reading them much easier for searchers.
5. Radical Relevant Content Wins Every Time
Search engine robots search text to index and rank your web pages. So, give them what they want – keyword rich relevant text. Write body text for humans first, search bots second. Also, try to put yourself in your searchers’ shoes. Ask yourself – What might people be typing into Google’s search query field to find my web site? Then play the search “dating game” and give them what they want: relevant content and keywords sprinkled throughout the text.
There are tens of thousand of opinions on how much text should be on a page. Use common sense and visually look at your page. Does it look skimpy in regards to how much relevant content you are trying to give searchers? My rule is a minimum of two hundred fifty words and above of highly relevant information. If a searcher has to scroll down more than a few inches “below the fold,” then I have too much text on the page.
How many keywords in the body text? Use your own discretion. If you’ve overdone your text with too many keywords it will scream “redundant” not “relevant.” Go for relevant, not redundant.
There are many excellent web site owners who report they have “never” requested an in-bound link to their site, yet tens of thousand of other web sites link to them! How is this so? Simply because they offer great relevant information to searchers! Searchers then bookmark the pages, tell their friends and associates about the pages write about them in blogs and so on. If you concentrate more on relevancy than on how many keywords you put on your page for a search spider, you will attract tons of in-bound links.
6. Poignant Page Titles Rock
Web page titles weigh heavily in the algorithms of search engines and are not only important to them, but are also part of the first impression searchers usually look at after they perform a search query of your listing.
It is crucial that you have your top keywords strategically placed in your page titles in the order that a searcher typed into the query field (or at least in close proximity). Put your most important category keywords at the beginning, in order of search importance. If you are optimizing a page for a company name or brand name, then consider separate web pages for each. A few good rules are: each page should be unique, with three major keywords for each web page, and three less important keywords. Always consider adding a location name to where you’re doing business, if it applies.
7. Meaningful Meta Keyword & Description Tags
Many SEO experts say search engine keyword / description Meta tags are no longer or rarely used – I don’t agree. The proof is that a well-written Meta description tag for many of my clients is in fact picked up in the SERPs! Sometimes a snippet of it is used, along with a snippet of keyword-rich body text. Search engines change and tweak their algorithms all the time. They may, or may not, put more importance on meta tags in the future. I’ll keep playing it safe and use them.
Writing a good description tag with a call to action that mentions “free shipping” or a “gift with a purchase” is certainly better than no description at all. Surveys of web searchers show that what searchers read most often is the search query description.
Gathering a big juicy list of Meta keywords together helps the professional optimizer focus on which keywords are truly relevant to each and every web page – even if you only use a fraction of those keywords on the actual page. Copying and pasting both of these keyword-rich text attributes into a web page’s meta tag area takes just a few seconds of time. So why not simply do it?
8. Hell of a Heading (H1 – H6 tags)
I love these for two important reasons. Always remember: searchers scan text before reading text!
Reason 1: The search engines appear to rate my client’s web pages really well when ever I use them.
Reason 2: The other benefit is for searchers. Big, bold headings point out what’s on the page. Searchers scan the headings way before they commit to reading the body text. When a searcher clicks your listing in the SERPs and lands on one of your pages, they will read on if the headings contain their keywords. If they don’t contain the keywords, they take off in search of a site that has what they are looking for. Headings stand out and are “scan friendly,” so use them whenever you can.
9. Love Those Links!
The web got its start with links, and nothing about this has changed except that people (especially web site designers) are forgetting about this! Hypertext links are what search engine spiders follow to index and rank web pages. If search spiders can’t simply and easily follow links pointing to your site from other sites, from your site to their sites, or from page to page once inside of your site, then you will not be found – period. And if your site can’t be found, what is the point of having a web site in the first place?
Some common problems that pose roadblocks for search spiders are: all-Flash sites, heavy-duty use of JavaScript, deep dynamic pages that are database-driven, and other advanced technologies. Google states it clearly in its Guidelines to webmasters: “Google has trouble indexing” these technologies.
There is nothing wrong with using any of these (and other) advanced technologies on your web site, but you simply must take the search engine’s robot into consideration when using them.
I have no doubt in my mind that Flash, video, images, databases, iPod-cast and more will all be much more search friendly in the near future, but if you want to be found and ranked well in the SERPs now, stick to plain vanilla HTML web pages that are spider friendly right along-side your way-cool Flash movie.
All pages on your site should link to at least one other web page within your site. Always create a site map for your site and periodically submit it to the search engines, especially if you add pages or make significant changes to your site.
Site maps help spiders quickly find every page on your site. It’s also great for searchers who may have not found exactly what they are looking for, or need some help to navigate your site better.
No web site is an island. If you think highly of other web sites that share the theme of your site in some way, by all means give them a link. Exchange links with sites your visitors truly will find useful in some way. Don’t exchange links just to increase your page rank popularity – this is a complete waste of time.
10. Quick SEO Ranking Tricks and Guarantees (Yeah, right)
There aren’t any guarantees. Bottom line, if you’re the impatient type, you are not going to have any patience for SEO at all. SEO takes time. I repeat, TIME as in “months of time.” If you are the impatient type, I recommend that you open a Google AdWords or Yahoo Search Marketing account, which will suit you much better than doing your own SEO.
There is a very good reason that unethical SEO is called “black hat ” SEO. Taking the incredible risk of trying to do anything unethical with the search engines or with searchers will get you banned. Trust me, there are many novice optimizers who didn’t know making that “little change” to their web site would cause their site to disappear from Google.
SEO forums have countless webmasters desperately asking for help and requesting information on how to get their sites reinstated. Keep in mind that some of your competitors may be constantly checking your site and looking for anything out of the ordinary. If they see anything that might get your site to fall out of favor with a search engine, you can bet they are only a click or two away from reporting you to the search engines.
Strike the word “guarantee” from your SEO vocabulary. You cannot – I repeat, cannot – guarantee that you will get an optimized organic web page on Page One of a search engine. Search engines are constantly changing, and web sites that are listed by the search engines are constantly changing in response. If an SEO firm or person guarantees you some kind of page rank, you should say “thank you for sharing” and then run away. No one can guarantee rankings, even if they claim to have “friends at Google” or secret insider information that gives them any kind of special edge.

A web page that looks great to the human eye can be totally meaningless to search engines. For example, search engines cannot read the text on the images of your web site, and many don’t understand web languages such as JavaScript or CSS.
If you have a great looking web site that is meaningless to search engines, you won’t be able to achieve high search engine rankings with that web site – no matter how good and interesting your web site content is.
In general, search engines cannot see content that is presented in the following file formats:
images (GIF, JPEG, PNG, etc.)
Flash movies, flash banners, etc.
JavaScript and other script languages
other multimedia file formats
Some search engines can index some of these file formats but in general, it’s very difficult to obtain high search engine rankings if your main web site content is presented only in these formats.
Search engines need text to index your web site. They cannot know what’s written on your GIF or JPEG images or in your Flash movies. If you use a lot of images on your web site, you should also create some web pages that contain a lot of text.

Search Engine Optimization, though an integral part of developing a complete web presence, is something that’s often overlooked by both web design companies and their clients alike. This article is meant to serve as an introduction to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and it will be followed with a 2nd article which contains a basic primer on how to go about properly optimizing a site. My intended audience for this first article is the savvy consumer who is trying to educate himself or herself, and the follow-up article will endeavor to help those design/development firms who are only just breaking into the world of SEO.
What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the process of increasing a site’s ranking on search engines such as Google, Yahoo, or MSN. Ideally, you want your business to appear as the first result to someone who is searching for a product or service you provide to your customers. For example, if you own a vegetarian restaurant in Philadelphia, it would significantly increase your restaurant’s exposure if your website were the first result for “vegetarian restaurant Philadelphia” on Google. This type of positioning is the goal of search engine optimization.
Organic Results vs. Paid Results
It is important to understand the difference between organic search results and paid search results. Organic search results are selected and positioned by the search engine itself, with no external bias toward one site over another. With organic searching, the order of results is determined exclusively by the relevance of the site to the user’s specific query, as determined by the search engine’s internal algorithms. Search engine optimization endeavors to “educate” the search engine about a site so that the site will be seen as relevant for certain queries, and therefore given better positioning in the results. This “most relevant site first” method of ordering search results is in sharp contrast to pay-per-click, in which the highest bidder for a given search query is given preference. However, pay-per-click results are generally shown on separate parts of the screen from the main organic results, usually at the top of the window or in a sidebar labeled “sponsored links”. Although there are compelling reasons to launch a pay-per-click campaign as part of your online marketing plan, this article focuses exclusively on organic search optimization.
Won’t the search engines just find my site on their own?
Modern search engines are very adept at crawling the web and creating a comprehensive index that contains every website they come across. However, the algorithms used by search engines take into account many different factors when determining where to position a site, and if your site doesn’t measure up when it comes to some of the more important factors, you will end up buried among thousands or millions of other sites.
Search engines have one goal: to return the most relevant results to a user’s query in order to help them find what they are looking for. Why is it, then, that if you do in fact own a vegetarian restaurant in Philadelphia, your website can still get buried on page 29 for the exact query “vegetarian restaurant in Philadelphia”? One reason for this apparent discrepancy is that search engines don’t view websites the way a person does. When a search engine downloads a web page, it sees only the markup code that was used to create the site – it doesn’t see visual elements like graphics or page layout. If the site hasn’t been optimized, more often than not, the search engine’s back-end view of the site offers little indication of what content is important and what the primary focus of the site is. These search engine “spiders” – the algorithms that do the actual searching and indexing – can make a good guess as to what the site is about, but without a clear understanding of why it would be a great result for a specific search query, the site will end up in a mediocre position at best.
Another reason sites receive a poor ranking is that they simply don’t appear to be very important to the grand scheme of the Internet. Search engines are trying to return the most useful results to their users, so if your content appears to be of little value, and if no other sites on the web are linking back to yours, your site is going to be very poorly positioned. One way to combat this problem is to work to build inbound links, which are links to your site from other sites. This can be accomplished by submitting your site to online directories, participating in forum discussions or blog discussions relevant to your site and including a link back, or by marketing the site via press releases or external product reviews (where applicable). Inbound links, however, aren’t the whole story, and it takes a comprehensive SEO plan to ensure long term, first page positioning, especially in competitive markets.
Why didn’t my web designer optimize my site when he built it?
There is a common misconception that search optimization is simply a matter of altering the design of the site or adding a few keywords to the content, and that such SEO-related tasks should be handled by the web designer prior to the site launch. While it’s true that there are design elements that need to be addressed when optimizing a site, SEO is, in many ways, a marketing effort rather than a technical one. The optimization process involves tasks such as copywriting and press release distribution, which fall well outside the technical realm of web development. In the end, SEO is an entirely separate product and process from the actual web design, and it needs to be treated (and budgeted) as such.
Recall what I said earlier regarding search engines evaluating the overall importance of your site in order to determine its search positioning. Much like a print campaign or TV ad, your goal on the web is to increase brand awareness, because it gives a sense of stability and competitive importance to your company, and it creates a connection between the company and your customers. The idea of brand awareness is well understood and sought after in the marketing world, but it often becomes diluted when crossing over to the web, sometimes to the point of being tacked on as an afterthought to the development of a company website. SEO should, conversely, be considered an integral part of any marketing plan, and should be budgeted and managed separately from web design and development.
Who can optimize my site?
In the world of SEO, it’s very easy to find companies who are essentially selling snake oil. Oftentimes, these companies offer little more than “directory submission”, which, while it is a piece of the SEO puzzle when done correctly, may not affect your positioning at all when done incorrectly (in some cases, it can actually hurt your positioning). Choosing the right SEO firm can be tricky, but Google has a page dedicated to the most important things to consider when choosing an SEO company. To add to what Google has suggested on that page, it’s important that the SEO firm you choose offers a plan that is tailored specifically for your website. If their plan seems instead to consist of generic link building and indiscriminate directory submission, it’s likely that you won’t see the kind of results you would ideally expect (if you see any results at all). The SEO company should take the time to detail individual changes to each page of your site, and should suggest new pages to be added. Additionally, any good SEO firm will be able to not only provide analytics and metrics, but will also be able to explain the data’s significance within the context of your specific website.
Conclusion
Search engine optimization should be considered an integral part of developing your company’s web presence, but it’s important to remember that SEO effectively crosses the boundary between technical process and marketing endeavor, so it needs to be managed and budgeted as an independent project, rather than being tacked on as part of the general site design. If your web development company doesn’t offer comprehensive and developed SEO services, it is important to hire a separate SEO firm and facilitate ongoing cooperation between the two companies.

Having a website that gets displayed in Google, Yahoo, and MSN, etc. isn’t tough to do, but it may be difficult to know where to start. Here are the newest and greatest tips to get you started:
1. Do not buy a new domain if not you have to. The search engines put so much stock in how long your website and domain have been around. While you may buy a new domain and redirect your old one to the new one, your best bet is to use your existing domain/website if at all probable. If you’re redesigning or starting from scratch and you have to use a brand-new domain for some or other reason, you may expect at least somewhat of a loss in search engine traffic. It might be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months or more.
2. Optimize your site for your target visitors, not for the search engines. This might sound counterintuitive, but hear me out. The search engines are looking for pages that best fit the keyword phrase someone types into their small search box. If those “someones” are typing in search words that relate to what your site gives, then they are most probable members of your target audience. You have to optimize your site to meet their requirements. If you don’t know who your target audience is, then you require finding out one way or another. Look for studies online that may give demographic information, and see other sites, communities, or forums where your target audience might hang out and listen to what they discuss. This information will be vital to your resulting website design, keyword research, and copywriting.
3. Research your keyword phrases broadly. The phrases you think your target market may be searching for may very well be false. To find the best phrases to optimize for, use research tools like Keyword Discovery, Word tracker or Google’s Keyword Tool. Compile lists of the most relevant phrases for your site, and opt a few different ones for every page. Never shoot for general keywords like “travel” or “vacation,” as they are rarely (if ever) indicative of what your site is actually about.

How do the search engines find web sites? Do they wait for you to submit your site? Not any more. Usually search engines index a site whether it is formally submitted or not. Search engines use automated software robots called crawlers or spiders that move through the world wide web following the hyperlinks, from page to page and site to site, recording what they find as they go. They do this continually, checking back with sites already listed to see if they still exist, to find new pages, and to check for new content.
This means that if your web site is linked to from another web site that is already indexed, your site will be indexed on the next pass of the robot! If all of your web site pages are linked properly to each other, they will be indexed as well. In addition, many search engines actually share the same data! So if you get listed on one of them you will eventually be listed on the rest.

If you are in a niche market that has its own search engines, like genealogical web sites for example, it is worth submitting your site to specialist search engines, which may not share data with the larger, more general search engines.
So what about the SEO companies that will submit your site to thousands of search engines every month for a year for $375? This service is not only unnecessary, but also may be harmful to your search engine ranking. These companies use robots to submit your site to a list of search engines repeatedly. Most search engine software can detect excessive automated submissions and may actually penalize sites that are submitted multiple times and rank them lower or even black list them.
Of course getting indexed is only half the battle. You need to be listed, but you also need to be well ranked. Ranking a web site is a way of assigning it priority over other sites with similar content. The exact ranking algorithm used by search engine companies is a closely guarded secret. But they do make public the criteria that the calculations are based on and provide basic guidelines to web site designers for successful search engine optimization.
Guidelines for successful search engine optimization: The site must have relevant content to the key words used in the search. The closer the match to the exact key words, the better. The more often, the most emphasized, and the higher on the page the search term appears, the better. The more incoming links from other related web sites, the higher the ranking. The bigger (the more content, the most pages) the higher the ranking. The more current, most often updated, the higher the ranking. The older (longest uninterrupted active time span), the better. It is much more effective in the long run to make your web site as relevant and useful to the people who will search for your product or service as possible than to try and trick the search engines into ranking your web site higher than it should be. In fact, several practices commonly employed to fool search engines now have negative effects. Search engine companies actively research such techniques and developed ways to counter them in the interests of maintaining the accuracy and integrity of their search results.
Some examples of deceptive SEO techniques to avoid are: Very small text not meant to be read by humans but added only for search engines. Same colour text as the background colour (again for search engines only). Excessive use of popular search terms that have nothing to do will your product, like “sex”, or “free”. Misleading or non-relevant text in the meta tags of your site. Adding pages of text that are only long strings full of key words. Participating in link schemes with sites that are not related to your content. Using Javascript to redirect to different content for the user than for the search engine. In short, doing anything with your site that either displays to the search engine different content than the human visitors see, or anything that dilutes or corrupts your unique content is not advisable.
So there you go, there really are no tricks, the rules are straightforward – no more mystery. If your site takes into account all of the above, your site will be well optimized for search engines.

These have been carefully created to include the right words, without taking away from the information and appearance of the site. It means that the sites for which the keywords are truly relevant have a lower chance at achieving proper search engine ranking.
To prevent such efforts, search engines have employed such techniques as penalizing web sites and web pages that include information that has been copied directly from other sites. They also penalize pages and sites that have the same word repeated too many times in its content. There are other rules that are utilized as well, but they differ from search engine to search engine.
Penalization from a search engine can mean anything from assigning a very low rank, to blocking it from being indexed altogether. Naturally, when you are a legitimate site, you will want to avoid such punishment at all costs. Therefore, when you are performing your search engine optimization, it is important that you take care not to break the “spam” rules of the search engines. This includes one very important technique: when in doubt, err to the side of safety. It’s much better to achieve rank number two instead of number one, when you risk being kicked out altogether.
It is not difficult to search engine optimize legitimately. Simply create your own original copy, and write naturally, refraining from repeating your keywords so many times that things look a little bit “fishy”. The same thing goes for repeating the same website under a number of different domain names. Just keep yourself unique and natural, and all will work out in your favor with the search engines.
