An RSS feed makes it easy for people to follow your website anyway they like. They can use it on the homepage, like IGoogle or Netvibes or within a email client like Outlook. An RSS feed helps build followers and makes it easy for people to do so without having to visit your webpage.
If someone uses your RSS feed on a different site, say their website, it creates a backlink for you depending on how many entries show up. Furthermore, if they specify a ‘nofollow’ on their links, this wont help you much with your backlinks because nofollow links are not counted by robots/spiders/crawlers.
An RSS feed should show up as a list of your most recent posts/blog entries/site updates… so I am not really sure why you see a folder. If you supplied the URL of your feed, I could let you know if it is working correctly.
RSS feeds do not really build links as much as they increase repeat visitors and readership/loyalty.
