Do You Belong on the Web: An Introduction to Webpage Design

Any business not having a presence on the Internet will soon not be in business. This prophetic warning is the centerpiece of a current commercial campaign, but few marketing experts would disagree. A consumer today looking for information may be more likely to click on the Internet than to turn to the yellow pages. This leaves those in the counseling profession to assess the need for their community center, private practice, or church to create a website. A website is an effective avenue to reach your community, including counselees (or potential counselees).
Through this medium a counselor can promote available services, creatively describe the purpose and mission of these services, and disperse educational information to the community and clients. The latter can be viewed as a community service, which provides basic information on old resources, prevention, and wellbeing.
Â
Â
Â
*Where Do I Begin?*
Â
A good way to assess the importance of a website is to answer one basic question: Do I want to promote my business on the web or actually start conducting business on the web? The answer to this question will contribute significantly to a decision about how much time and money to invest in the site. With that in mind, test the waters by doing some
Â
online research or browsing. This is as easy as typing key words such as Christian counselingor Christian mental health into a search engine on the Internet. Many sites will appear that are related to Christian counseling. Some will be private centers; others will be church-based centers. You may stumble onto some sites that provide online counseling or e-mail counseling. Explore the results on a few different search engines (www.yahoo.com, www.infoseek.com, www.excite.com, etc.). Look at each site to see what you like and dislike, developing an understanding of the current capabilities of the technology. Take some
Â
time to probe into more intricate sites to explore what each section has to offer. Maybe even bookmark the sites that correspond to your needs and preferences, in case you might want to refer back to them or even contact the owners of the site to ask some questions. This whole process can be accomplished in anywhere from half an hour to half a day, depending on how interesting it becomes. After this initial research, do you think you want to create a website? If so, there are three basic options for you.
Â
Â
Â
*An Essential for Most Businesses*
The first option is to create a personal webpage, which consists of a homepage(and perhaps another page or two) with some basic information about who you are, what you do, a contact point, and e-mail, with a few graphics thrown in for visual appeal. A homepage is a great entrance into web communication. By setting one up it is possible to get a feel for what it takes to create a page before committing yourself too deeply. I would highly recommend that anyone who has a computer go through this basic process. While it does take a little time to understand, it is worth this investment for you to stay relevant, not only in terms of advertising and accessibility, but also culturally. If this is where you would like to begin, I would recommend going through one of the major online service providers (AOL, CompuServe), that will walk you through the process with relative ease. This is highly advisable for those who already pay the $19.95 a month for online service because the website space is free. Depending on the online
Â
service, this option includes enough space for 2,0005,000 words and a few medium sized graphics. A domain name or the address of the page is also included free of charge. The drawback of this is that the name you choose to use will be tied to the provider, such as www. serviceprovider.com- john doe instead of www. johndoe.com.
Â
Â
Â
*A Step Farther*
Â
A second option is to design a simple website. Beyond the webpage, this is a connection of more complicated elements, such as more graphics, links (addresses) to other sites, and information to download. An effective counseling website might include information on anxiety or basic relaxation techniques something of value to your community. Such a site can provide useful information to your clients, such as ways to contact you and directions to your office. Viewers might even download an intake form which they could fill out before coming in. A good way to assess the importance of a website is to answer one basic question: Do I want to promote my business on the web or actually start conducting business on the web? This type of site can be hosted on one of the
Â
major providers, but other national Internet Service Providers (ISPs) such as Mindspring, Netcom, and UUNet have different packages to offer. Aside from these, some local ISPs will offer lower prices with more than
Â
enough space and technical support for what is needed. These can be found in local newspapers or on sites such as www.tophosts.com or www.thelist.internet.com. At this point, it might be important to invest in web design software. This will cost around $100$150 and can be included in office software packages such as Microsoft Office 2000.
Â
Â
Â
*Diving In*
Â
A third tier is a website that actually hosts commerce. At this level, you are actually doing business on the web. This option is more expensive and, of course, more complicated. If you think that this type of site is needed, then it would be highly recommended to do more in-depth reading and research, perhaps hiring a company to design the site. This type of site is not usually for beginners and may require more software.
Â
Â
Â
*Further Considerations*
Once the decision is made to develop your own website, there are a couple of things to consider. If the goal is a page that appears more professional than personal, consider paying an extra $70 to register the domain that you want, to avoid being joined to the ISPs name. If you want to register a domain name or check to see if it is still available, the only company that officially grants these names is Network Solutions Inc. (www.networksolution.com). Some service providers will offer to do this at little to no extra cost. Look at different ISPs to see which one offers more space (1020MB), easier software, and better technical assistance suited to your needs. Also, make sure that the ISP will allow for movement of the site and domain name to another ISP if desired. Some find the design aspect to be the most intimidating factor in creating a website. While some sites are quite elaborate, the process does not have to be complicated; a simple design with a few graphics can effectively communicate your message. The basic process is as simple as typing a few paragraphs on a word processing program. This copy is then converted
Â
to the format HTML, the standard format for web pages, by simply selecting File type HTML under  the Save as menu. Finally, send the page to your site or site host, which can help you with this process.
Â
*What about Maintaining the Website?*
Another point to consider is how much time you need to put into maintaining the site you want. Some sites/pages may just need an occasional update of services or phone numbers; others will encompass dates and information such as groups or conferences that need to be updated weekly or biweekly. Plan your site according to how much time you will be able to invest in upkeep. Do not build a site that will list dates and other currently relevant material without budgeting the time to change the material. Keep in mind the material and how often it will need to be changed. Once you have created a site, the maintenance is less complex and can be done with much greater ease compared to the initial effort.
Â
Â
*Resources*
A lot of information is available to help you take the next step. Most bookstores will have a large range of self-help books ranging from
entry-level web construction to more sophisticated programming languages. Flip through a few that seem to be suited to your need and level of knowledge. Web design software can be purchased over the web or in any computer store. If a very low-level design is needed, Microsoft includes in Windows 95 and 98 a Front page Express program that is a very basic and will be good for beginners. Online therapy can be helpful to get rid of such problems.
Some ISPs may provide similar programs. In the not so-distant future, almost all businesses will have some type of web presence on the Internet; chances are that most counselors will, too. Take the time to set apart one Saturday and try putting a webpage together. I think you’ll find it to be a positive experience that will allow you to feel more in touch with all of the tech raised adolescents out there. If you have the money and like to relax a little more on Saturdays, ask one of your neighborhood kids to help you. Online counseling is always available to help you out.

The Yeast of the Pharisees Spiritual Abuse By Pastors and Counselors
Spiritual abuse is usually more severe in church than in counseling settings. Pastors are often accorded great respect and authority in critical life domains marriage, sexuality, relationships, and finances. They lead communities that exert social pressures and offer belonging and fellowship. Abuse in these contexts affects most aspects of life.

Why Read The Linden Method Review?
With its successful story, it is advisable to read the Linden Method review; however, not all reviews are reliable enough because most people giving review have never experienced anxiety or even panic attacks. This is the problem for most Linden method reviews. Instead of giving insight to their experience, they may be overdoing it especially in discussing the things included in the package. They may give its readers biased opinion based on what they see, but not on actual experience.
