Web inventor Berners-Lee fights to keep it open
We often consider 21 to be a coming-of-age year, and the World Wide Web’s impending 21st birthday will be no different. The Web will officially hit adulthood this coming Christmas, which will mark 21 years since computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee first initiated communications between an HTTP client and a Web server , thus marking the dawn of the so-called “information age” that defined the 1990s.

Web 2.0 News: Reddit Goes Open Source, Twitturly, TwitLinks
Nov 12th
freelinereport.com Twitturly, or Twitt(url)y, is a new website that scans Twitter and looks for links people are talking about the most. It then assembles them onto its home page – making this into a really great news source. Twitt(url)y has got the same community appeal as Digg, but without the need to actually go out and vote on something. Instead, just Twittering about a subject and giving the URL is considered a vote, and the more links, the more it rises. Kind of like how Google uses PageRank in its algorithm. freelinereport.com If you want the same kind of thing, but only for tech news, you can head on over to Twit Links and get an aggregated set of links built for the latest news in technology. The web design at TwitLinks.com is sparse, but powerful, giving you up to date news the minute it is twittered. freelinereport.com Then there’s SmashingFeeds, a site that mashes up content from Twitter and tons of other places that offer an RSS feed. It’s free, and it doesn’t even require a login to start using the features. You just point and click and view, wandering around and soaking in all that web 2.0 news. freelinereport.com Next, if you are a book lover and want the same power of Digg or Delicious for your personal library, check out the social site called LibraryThing. It helps you catalogue almost all of your books for free, and you can carry on conversations with people who have the same books. If you have a lot of books, you can even buy a scanner and have your …

Search Engine Submission Tools Open Traffic Floodgates to Websites
Sep 3rd
Search engine submission tools are excellent tools when it comes to getting our websites indexed in the search engines. Such tools can either be provided by search engine submission services or in the form of software. What they can do for us is rather straightforward – submitting our website details for inclusion in the search engines. Why is it so crucial that we make use of these search engine submission tools?
There are a few reasons why we submit to search engines. One reason is to get our websites indexed as quickly as possible. Indexing is important so that people can locate our websites in the search engines. Websites that are not indexed cannot be found at all, so it doesn’t matter even if we have built a 1000 page website. Indexing in search engines is powerful because search engines network with one another. Once it is picked up by one search engine, the rest would slowly catch up. One trick is to submit your website to MSN, as they allow you to suggest websites for their search engine spiders to explore. MSN tend to index websites faster than Yahoo and Google. Once your website is accepted and indexed in MSN, the rest would follow shortly.
Another reason why we submit to search engines is to optimize exposure of our websites. There are literally hundreds to thousands of small search engines which you may not have heard of. Some of them are in collective partnership with the major search engines, so there is an intricate network of search engines that interact with one another. Pitting yourself against big-timers or established websites in the major search engines can be a draining and most of the time, unrewarding journey. Submitting to the small search engines and getting them indexed gives you greater opportunities to rank high in them.
While submitting to smaller search engines is an excellent idea, webmasters also understand it is a chore to submit to the search engines one by one. It feels like eternity to submit to hundreds of them. People by nature don’t like repetitive tasks especially you are one of those who hate to perform data-entry tasks. The solution is therefore to employ the services of search engine submission tools like search engine submission services or software.
There are many choices in the internet but unfortunately, some of them charge an exorbitant fee to submit your website. Unless your pockets are deep or your returns from search engine submissions far exceed your expenses, you would find using search engine submission tools barely a good investment or website promotion method. Naturally, there are also some unscrupulous services that employ unorthodox or blackhat search engine submission tools to spam the search engines and their network partners with your website details, getting you banned rather ranking well. Discover what the cheap yet effective options are at my blog if you are looking for affordable search engine submission tools.

Google To Give Away The VP8 Video Codec As A Gift To The World, Open Source & Patent Free!
Jun 23rd
As many of you know, HTML 5 is very powerful and very light weight. Many of companies and people around the globe hope that HTML 5 will kill Flash for video sites once and for all. But there is a problem, what video codec should become the standard for streaming a long side HTML 5? H.264 has great compression but it is all of the way proprietary and even open source web browsers may have to pay money in order to support it. On the other hand Ogg Theora is both open source AND patent free, but the compression is not as good as H.264. And so for some time the debate has been, what should the web take up as a standard? H.264 or Ogg Theora? Google’s answer? Nether! Google bought out On2 Technologies who owned a fantastic compression video codec and word has it very very soon they will officially announce that they will be giving away this codec to the world as free / open source software. This move should single handedly change everything. If everything goes as planned this codec will most likely not only become the single standard for web streaming but my guess is the open source Linux world will also start using it as the default video save codec. Steve Jobs: Adobe’s Flash Is Old PC History, Open Web Is the Future
In a rare response to the chatter about Apple’s tech feud with Adobe , Apple’s Steve Jobs has declared that that the Web should really embrace open standards, even while the iPhone remains closed. Jobs just had Apple publish his musings on Apple’s “hotnews” section. And it’s amazing. No, seriously, it’s amazing, not only for the frankness of the text, its overt challenge to Adobe’s reliability …
