Drive Massive Traffic to Your Site Using the Power of Social Bookmarking
Jun 22nd
One of the best ways to succeed in your internet marketing business is to use social bookmarking. I have accounts on Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Classmates,Tagged and ZenZuu. This strategy will be of great help in terms of getting targeted audience, generating more traffic to your website and achieving higher ranking in search engines. When you achieve these, you can be sure to earn more profits.
Social bookmarking is free to use and enables web users to save links to their favorite web pages that they want to visit again and share with other people. Additionally, they can vote, comment and discuss about the sites or blogs and then submit the site and get feed backs from other users. If the users like your site, there’s a chance they will visit it again to obtain information and other updates.
New features have actually been added to these types of sites. These include ratings, comments on bookmarks, the ability to import and export bookmarks from browsers, emailing bookmarks, web annotation as well as groups or other social network features. Although these bookmarks are public, they can be saved privately and shared only with specific groups of people or networks. People with access to these bookmarks can view them in various ways – by category or tags, chronologically or through a search engine.
Social bookmarking provides several benefits to promote your business. Firstly, web users can easily upload and save their preferred websites for other users to view. This alone is an effective way to improve your site’s traffic. Users are always clicking on banners out of curiosity. I wouldn’t be into Internet Marketing today if I hadn’t clicked on an add promoting MLM.
Users can also organize their bookmarks with informal tags instead of using the traditional system of folders. Tag refers to a keyword that describes a particular site and category. By using the appropriate bookmarking tags, search engines will be able to look for your content especially when a user searches for information within your category.
What you can do then is to bookmark your own site and get a suitable tag. Once you obtain the right tag on the social bookmarking site, other people will know about your site and will visit it eventually. So this only means that when you have the proper tag, you drive more traffic to your site.
Another big advantage is for your site to be visited by search engines and indexed. A new website has a chance of being visited by search engine robots within a day of submission to social bookmarking sites. Learning the basics of SEO Optimization is important in driving traffic to your site.
Personal branding is a great benefit as well. In other words, by using social bookmarking sites, you are given the ability to develop your own page on their site. With this page, you can list all your web pages, post links to your websites and publish content on any field of interest. This then allows you to establish yourself as an authority in your own niche.
Many people have been spending money just to ensure a high page rank in search engine results but with social bookmarking, there’s no need for that as it provides a one-way link to promote your site to other web users at no cost at all. This should, however, be coupled with credibility and a good reputation so that people will learn to trust you and your business. People ultimately do not buy into your product because it solely benefits them. They largely buy into it because of you.

Page Rank Transfer From an Old Site to a New Site – Search Engine Optimisation
Jun 22nd
When moving from an old to a new website it is extremely important to consider the old sites existing organic search engine position. If the correct strategy is not undertaken then the old sites position in the search marketplace could be dramatically compromised. It’s important to gain an understanding of two specific areas of the old site before undertaking a strategy:
1) The existing listing saturation: This is the number of pages which have been listed, cached and indexed within each of the major search engines. Each page listing will be producing a level of visitor traffic, each associated to different groups of keywords and search terms. It’s essential to make sure existing page URL’s remain the same or old URL’s are directly mapped to the new site. Making sure that every page directly maps to its new version.
2) The existing link popularity: This is the number of pages which form one way links back to the old site or where the old site has been directly referenced by another website using a hyperlink. These include 3rd party websites, directories, social media sites, articles, news and review websites etc. The Links form the basis of the sites popularity, and page rank. It’s essential to make sure that all links remain live and point to the same active page weather new or old.
Both of these areas are directly related to the old sites existing search engine presence and performance. If a strategy for moving and maintaining these links is not put in place before the DNS is transferred to the new site, it is possible that the new site will receive a massive drop in Page Rank, Trust Rank and listing saturation. It can take up to 6 months to recover from this type of situation and unfortunately there would be a percentage of links to the site which will be lost forever.
There are two main strategies which can be used to prevent this from happening and to maintain the sites online presence:
1) To use all existing URL strings, page titles and meta data in the formation of the new site and its pages. The content, page titles and meta data can be improved or adjusted but the relevance of each page will need to be maintained. With the creation of most new site upgrades, this is the most practical way forward and is more time efficient. As the site and its pages will appear the same to the search engines but just upgraded (i.e. the page URL is identical, but the page content and files sizes will be different.), page rank, link popularity and link saturation will be maintained and transferred to the new site. The search engines will notice a difference in page size, files sizes and file names etc. This should improve search engine interest, as they will believe that the content has been updated, as this is across the entire site it will increase robot visits and should lead to the site listings being updated. This should mean that any new pages will be picked up and indexed fairly rapidly.
2) All of the old websites pages are indexed and mapped to their counterpart pages on the new website using a 301 redirect (permanent redirect) and Mod-Rewrite. In most cases each page will have its associate page rank transferred to the new mapped page, but this is not always the case and it will take some time. Quite often search engine listings will initially drop in rank, as all of the site will appear new and then start to increase once the page rank is transferred. Some pages lose their page rank and popularity and it’s difficult to predict the reason behind this. Inbound links from 3rd party websites will be mapped to the new pages of the website using this strategy. Associated page rank will be transferred to the page but this will not be immediate and may take some time, anything from 1-3 months, depending on the linking sites importance. If possible it would be worth contacting link partners and directory sites in order to change the associated URLS. This can be a difficult and time consuming process and as a result it is sometimes more time and cost efficient to continue the sites ongoing search marketing strategy using the new URLS.
In order to help promote the indexing of new pages it will be essential to create regular XML sitemaps (Monthly or when the site has new content added.) and to submit them directly to the search engines, giving them a complete guide of the entire sites page structure.

How To Use Social Bookmarking On Your Plug-in Profit Site
Jun 20th
These days, you’re just not “with the program” if you’re not involved with social bookmarking. Recently I have been trying to increase my Plug-in Profit Site’s traffic numbers to a certain daily level, and one way to do that is by getting into one of the newer internet trends – social bookmarking.
Social bookmarking is a neat way of saving websites, articles, and blog posts that you consider your favorites. Then you can easily get back to these posts, share these same sites with others on the web, add other saved sites to your list of saved sites, or subscribe to someone’s blog for example.
Usually we bookmark pages we like on our own computers, but social bookmarking allows us to save them on the web for others to see as well. The way we do this is by creating a title, description, and tags (which are the keywords we are targeting) for the pages we want to save. This should generate some new traffic for you fairly quickly from others who use social bookmarking sites and are looking for articles based on the tags you have chosen.
If you own a Plug-in Profit Site, it’s easy to start using social bookmarking sites. If you do a Google search for “social bookmarking sites” for example, you will find a list of the top social bookmarking sites. One of the most famous ones is called “del.icio.us”, and other popular ones are “Digg”, “Yahoo”, and “Furl”.
It doesn’t take long to set these up. But first you have to go to those social bookmarking sites, and create a free account with a username. Once you’ve done that, you are free to use the service to find topics that interest you, or post your own favorite pages.
When you set up an account, you will likely be given a choice of buttons you can add to your toolbar that you can simply copy and paste. Then when you visit a site you want to bookmark publicly, you can simply click on that button on your toolbar, type in a title, description, and tags for that page, and voila! You have saved a page that others can also access!
On your Plug-in Profit Site, there are a few ways to get more traffic using social bookmarking sites. One way is to write quality, original content on your blog, such as posting your own article. On your social bookmarking service, you should be able to find a piece of code to add to your Plug-in Profit Site’s HTML code which will be like the button on your toolbar for the different services.
For example, on my blog, I have four buttons at the end of each blog post which I added to my blog’s template code. These four buttons would lead a reader who like my post to Digg, Furl, Yahoo, and del.icio.us, where they can add a title, description, and tags to submit my post and bring me more traffic.
The nice thing for Plug-in Profit Sites, or any website for that matter is that it’s okay to do this for your own article posts, as long as you do not spam the social bookmarking services.
You don’t really want to send each and every post you make to your blog to one of these services in the attempt to get more traffic when maybe not all your posts are fantastically written, original content. You want to provide something of value to your readers just as you would do in the discussion forums you frequent, and not over-do it.
Some article directory sites now are allowing you to “Digg” your own articles. Again, if you do it slowly and in moderation, you won’t likely be accused of spamming. Be careful because if you do go overboard, some people have been known to get their websites banned from services like Digg.
Another way to boost your Plug-in Profit Site traffic with social bookmarking sites is to actually get yourself involved with these services and use them the way they are intended to be used – don’t just “Digg” your own posts. Find other posts that you like and add a comment, or save them in your own archived lists.
Last but not least, whenever you write an article or blog post for your Plug-in Profit Site business, be sure to use Technorati or other tags in your author bio-box at the end that link back to your main website. Look up information on “tag and ping” to find out the correct format and you will get more traffic quickly!

Monitoring Web Traffic Through Site Analytics
Jun 17th
Do you know who is visiting your web site? Wouldn’t it be great if you also knew where they were coming from, how long they were on your site, and, most importantly, from which page they were exiting your web site and why? Web analytics software and real time web site tracking solutions have now made it possible for web masters as well as for those companies for whom a robust Internet presence is critical to success, to use this form of dynamic data to review performance, correct pitfalls and plan highly successful online marketing strategy. Let us begin by first exploring site tracking and analysis terminology:
Page Views
You have probably noticed this phrase in online marketing brochures where web sites proudly proclaim the large quantum of visitor traffic they have experienced on their sites. A Page View refers to the total views of every page on your web site. A Unique Page View is a page view by a unique person within a twenty-four hour period. Where as page view counts are site specific, unique page views are visitor specific. Both communicate important information about visitor behavior patterns and provide valuable insights into your search engine ranking.
Hits
The reason why there is some confusion about this term is because it emanates from server technology and not from the art and science of visitor tracking and web analytics. A Hit merely refers to the number of information requests received by a hosting server. The number of hits is determined by the number of objects on a page. For example, if your home page has twenty-one objects, your site hosting server will record the page access as twenty-one hits. A word to the wise… It is best to use this statistic cautiously for what it is worth and not to be misled by inflated hit counts when implementing your online marketing plan.
Referrer or Visitor Source
A Referrer or Referring Link also known as the Visitor Source is a page which links to your web site. By looking at your referrers, it is possible to accurately identify the pages from where your site visitors are arriving. Visitors usually arrive from one of these three sources:
· From another web site that has linked to your site
· A search engine results page
· Directly from a browser launch
Referral data is a gold mine of information because it clearly pinpoints the keywords or key phrases being used by searchers to arrive at your web site and the search engines that are sending you the traffic. You can use this data to conduct more targeted and meaningful keyword analysis, refine existing keywords and submit your site to search engines and directories where you are not listed. This data can also be used to further optimize the content of your web pages for improved search engine rankings (SERs).
User Agent
A User Agent is the software that is used by site visitors to access your web site. A User Agent could be a:
· Browser such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Safari
· PHP script pasted on a web page that points to your site
· Search engine spider programmed to index your site
This valuable data can be leveraged to precisely identify the last time a spybot visited your web site to index it. You can also use this data to map traffic trends, spot site abuse and trigger corrective action.
Geographical Location
Many web analytics packages and hosted services provide this information using IP look-up technology. They compile data about the geographical location of site visitors as well as the time of the day during which they visit your web site. You can deploy this data to fine-tune your marketing strategy specially in those regions of the world from where site traffic is below average.
There are still other types of traffic intelligence web analytics systems can provide. They include:
· The length of time a site visitor stayed on your web site
· The URL of the page on which site visitors land and exit your site
· The operating system (Windows XP, Vista etc.) and browser resolution settings on the
monitors of site visitors
Web Analytics and Improved Customer Service
The manner in which you can use web analytics data will depend largely on your site’s functionality and its purpose. For instance, if your site has a customer service orientation and provides live chat support for your customers, web analytics data is critical since it will enable you to further tweak the type and nature of your customer service. This key aspect of the overall customer service delivery process is of paramount importance because customer surveys continue to reveal the general level of dissatisfaction among customers regarding the quality of service on Internet e-transaction sites. According to a Harris Interactive survey conducted in August 2007, nine out of ten customers were unhappy with the type of customer service they received when shopping online. The Harris survey polled 2,430 US consumers aged 18 and older and concluded that most online shopping customers were experiencing significant problems when trying to interact with customer service personnel– a problem that a live chat solution can address and effortlessly remedy.
In the next issue of Live Wire Plus, we will objectively evaluate some of the leading web analytics solutions to help you select the service or product that best meets your needs.
Information in a Box
Web traffic statistics or web stats, as they are commonly referred to, are extremely potent tools used to generate organic data about web site usage. They provide critical information about which web pages on your web site receive maximum traffic. They also generate statistics on the web pages that attract the least amount of site traffic. Site analysis solutions also tell you who is on your site, how long they were on your site, on which page they landed and from where, and finally, from which page they have exited from your web site. Some of the more sophisticated site analytics packages can identify which web browsers are being used by site visitors and which ones should be optimized for improved results. Since these analysis tools compile crucial data on the search engines your visitors are using to arrive on your site and the keywords and key phrases they are typing into search engine search boxes, these tools can go a long way in implementing innovative marketing strategy for your web site or portal. Some can even check for dead links and send error messages.

3 Steps to a Search Engine Compatible Site
Jun 16th
Is your web site search engine compatible? Despite all the misinformation out there, it’s very easy to design a web site that search engines will love. All you need to do is follow 3 simple steps:
1) Obey the Search Engine Guidelines
Nearly all search engines publish their own guidelines regarding the submission of sites, the type of sites they will accept and recommendations for optimized content. Google recently updated their Webmaster Guidelines which cover the most common forms of deceptive or manipulative search engine behavior that they consider to be ‘spam’. They also published SEO Guidelines – advice for webmasters to heed when choosing an SEO. Google was the first search engine to publicly acknowledge search engine optimizers in this fashion.
It’s not just Google publishing anti-spam guidelines. You’ll find them at the following search engine sites as well:
Yahoo terms of service
Yahoo guidelines on search engine spam (covering AltaVista and AllTheWeb as well)
Yahoo definitions of search engine spam (covering AltaVista and AllTheWeb as well)
Yahoo content guidelines
MSN Search webmaster guidelines
AltaVista terms of use (AltaVista is a Yahoo-owned company)
Ask.com terms of service and spam policy
Ask.com editorial guidelines
2) Don’t Use Spammy Search Engine Tactics
Often, webmasters will use search engine spam techniques without even being aware that they are doing so. Or worse, web designers can – advertently or inadvertently – integrate techniques that could cause a site to be penalized in the site’s rankings in one or more engines, without the site owner’s knowledge of such penalties. The key to avoiding spamming the engines is research.
Keep track of the various search engine guidelines via the links above. Watch for any changes they make to these guidelines and tweak your site accordingly. Trawl the various webmaster and search engine forums regularly to ensure your site doesn’t use any of the latest optimization methods that appear to be penalized. If you suspect your site has been penalized, remove the offending content, contact the engine concerned and ask to be reinstated.
Google actually encourage you to file a re-inclusion request via their Help Center and this post by Google staffer Matt Cutts outlines what should be included.
Alternatively, here is a sample email template you can use instead:
——————————————–
Sample Re-inclusion Request Email
Dear [search engine name],
I am the owner of [your site URL].
I did not realize that participation in [spammy method] and
[spammy SEO name] programs could cause problems for my website. I was
assured that these techniques were search-engine-friendly by [your source for using spammy method].
I now understand that the practices used are not acceptable. I apologize for having allowed them to be placed on my website. I’ve removed the questionable pages and links from the site. I promise not to repeat such mistakes.
I am asking you to please consider reinstating my website,
[your site URL] into the [search engine name] Index.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
——————————————
To assist them to provide a high quality service, search engines encourage people to report search results they are dissatisfied with. If you spot some content spam or techniques that are clearly in breach of the search engine’s public guidelines, you can report it using these links:
Google spam report or via search-quality@google.com
AllTheWeb relevancy problem report (AllTheWeb is a Yahoo-owned company)
AltaVista search results manipulation report (or via Yahoo’s spam report)
Yahoo spam report
Ask.com spam report or via information@ask.com
3) Build Sites for Visitors Rather than Search Engines
The methodologies may have changed over the years, but the same principles have always applied to “good” or “white hat” SEO. Build sites for humans, not search engines. Make the site as user friendly as possible, avoid the bells and whistles and include high quality, relevant content.
Wherever possible, include text-based content and navigation menus with simple, descriptive, well-written copy designed to convert your visitors into customers. Include keywords and phrases your audience would logically type in to search engines to find sites like yours. Only link to sites that are relevant to your target audience and spend some time on usability, making sure all your forms and shopping carts work.
Remember that what pleases a visitor is almost always what pleases a search engine too.

Targeted Web Traffic – How to Get Web Site Traffic With Free Resources
Jun 14th
Targeted Web Traffic is getting visitors to your site who are interested in what you have to offer. These visitors have to be able to find your web site first. The two most common ways visitors will find your site is by typing in a word phrase into a search engine or linking to your web site from another web site. There are several ways to get your web site on the search engines results page and on other web sites. Many of these ways are free. Here are three free resources you can take advantage of to get targeted web traffic to your site.
Writing articles and publishing them on article web sites is a great way to bring attention to your web site. And sometimes these same articles will quickly rank on search engine results pages. This gives you another opportunity for visitors to find your site. These articles should have keywords or search phrases in them that visitors use to find information on your website topic. For example, if you have a website on aquariums. You would want your article to have phrases in it about aquariums or fish. These keywords should be considered in all three ways I discuss to get web site traffic.
Keep in mind, one article will not get the amount of targeted web traffic you are looking for. You will need to write and submit several articles focusing on the topic or niche of your web site. Most article web sites do not allow you to put links to any web sites in the body of the article. However, they do allow a bio box about the author to be used and a link can be placed in this text that points to your web site. Before publishing any articles, review each article web siteâs policies.
Social media sites like Squidoo or Hubpages are sites where the members create and provide most of the content for the site. These types of sites allow you to directly link to your web site. So, you can create a page on the site that discusses the topic that your web site is about. You can include links to your web site allowing the visitor to the social media site to follow the link or click through to your site. This then brings targeted web traffic to your web site because the visitor wants more information on the topic of your web site. As with all 3 of these web site traffic ideas, these social media sites want good content and not one big advertisement. Being spammy and not providing any useful content may get your page deleted. And there goes all your hard work.
Blogging and Microblogging are similar and are both ways to get targeted web traffic. Blogging can be done by having your own blog web site or using a community blogging website. WordPress has both types. I believe it is better to have your own blog so you are in control of the blog contents. Blogging is a platform that encourages the question âWhatâs on your mind?â to be answered. This type of site allows you to put in your own content, create links to your sites or other sites, similar to social media sites. Updating your blog weekly is a must. The search engines love new content. These updates can be short. Microblogging are sites that encourage very short entries, some only a couple of lines. One of these sites is Twitter. If blogging asks, âwhatâs on your mind?â, microblogging asks, âwhatâs on your mind right now?âAs with blogging, you can link to your web site with microblogs, but be sure to provide good, informative content.
Using all three of these traffic generating ideas together will help bring in a steady stream of traffic. All of these ideas should be done on a consistent basis to keep the flow of targeted web traffic going to your site. Although I have only listed a few resources, there are almost unlimited resources that can be used to get web site traffic.

7 Time-tested Content Types for Driving Web Traffic to Your Site
Jun 11th
If you have website or a blog, you need to create contents that people find useful. If the content is valuable, other sites will link to your content and you will increase the number of back links to your site. These back links will not only generate direct traffic from those sites, it will also help increase your search engine ranking and organic traffic.
So, what types of contents are baits for other sites to link to your sites? This article discusses seven types of contents that are proven to be magnets for back links. Try out a few of these techniques to increase your links and traffic.
1. Crete “How To” Guides. This type of guides is popular and also very useful to the readers Write down a few ideas related your niche and use authoritative websites to do your research.
Make it a step-by-step, preferably numbered like 1, 2, etc., guide. It should be as simple as a recipe but has enough details for some one to follow the steps to accomplish something.
2. Write controversial opinion on breaking news. Don’t repeat the news. Big news organizations have hundreds of paid stuff for news reporting. You need to analyze the news and offer your own opinions. However, if the opinion is off main stream, it has better chance of attracting others attentions.
3. Videos are becoming ever popular on the web. Create a video related to your niche but make it funny. People love funny videos. You can use kids and pets to create funny video shots and than try to tie those shots to your niche. Upload to a few popular video sites like YouTube and Metacafe. Don’t forget to put your website link in the video and embed the video in your website.
4. Keep a small inexpensive digital camera in you car all the time. When you come across funny things like, billboard and road signs, license plates, etc., take pictures and post it on your site and popular picture sharing sites like flickr, smugmug, etc.
5. Create a web tool related to your niche. Web tools like mortgage calculator, carbon foot print calculator, etc. are popular and useful. Ask your site visitors what type of tools they want to see on your site.
Once you have the details of what the tool should do, go to elance, rent-a-coder, or online programmers and webmasters forums to solicit bids for developing the tool. You don’t have to know any software programming, but you have to know exactly what the tools should do.
6. Solicit ideas for contests from forums you visit regularly and start a contest on your site. Announce it in forums related to your niche. Give away free stuff at least worth $50 to the winner and token prizes to all finalists.
Consider it as your advertisement spending. Run the contest for a month or so for the word to spread around. Encourage your visitors to spread the word.

How I Got 70,000 Useless Visitors to My Site in One Day! ( Analysis of Social Bookmark Traffic)
Jun 5th
Copyright (c) 2007 Titus Hoskins
Recently, a page on one of my websites was bookmarked or listed on Digg, a popular social bookmark site. It gave me the perfect opportunity to study and analyze the traffic coming from these social media sites. Read to discover the advantages and disadvantages of social bookmark traffic and how it can be applied to your own online marketing or site.
Is Social BookMark Traffic Useless?
First, we must make the distinction that no traffic is useless. Any visitor to your site is a good thing and should be welcomed. However, all traffic is not created equally, there are great differences in the sources of your traffic. This article takes a close analytical look at social bookmark traffic from an internet marketing perspective.
In case you haven’t noticed, right now social bookmark and media sites are all the rage on the web. Social bookmark traffic comes from such popular sites as Slashdot, Digg, Stumbleupon… basically these sites are driven by their users – that is, users or members pick and bookmark the content they want to view and discuss.
These social bookmark sites are extremely popular; they command the high traffic numbers most ordinary sites can only dream about obtaining.
But is this social bookmark traffic useful?
Is it worth your time? Should you be actively promoting to these social media sites? Should you concentrate your online marketing efforts on these types of sites? More importantly, what are the benefits and disadvantages of getting a front page listing on a sites like Digg or Stumbleupon?
As a full-time online marketer I wanted to know the answers to those questions. Moreover, I wanted to discover how or if I could use these sites from an online marketer’s advantage; i.e. how can they help me create more online income.
Recently, the Digg listing gave me a first-hand opportunity to really study these sites.
Of course, nothing happens without a reason… I did actually court these social bookmark sites by placing the free Addthis.com bookmark on all my pages. You can do the same. Just use this simple bookmark to attract these sites.
But be careful; getting your site featured on the front page of these sites can drive 100,000′s of visitors to your site immediately, so much traffic that it may overtax your server and crash it.
So be warned; if you’re actively promoting to these social bookmark sites just make sure your servers or web hosting is up to the demanding task of handling all these sudden visitors.
In my case, it didn’t crash my servers but unfortunately, the page/link in question featured an old poorly written article I did on the history of the Internet. Why it was even featured on Digg is a puzzle and beyond me.
But still I am not one to waste an opportunity, so I put my Google Analytics into overdrive and starting analyzing these visitors and social bookmark traffic.
It pointed out some very interesting factors about this bookmark traffic.
Most of this traffic will:
* simply bounce back
* very few visitors will spend much time on your site
* very few visitors will even venture into your site
* very few will sign-up to your newsletter
* very few will enter your marketing follow-ups/funnels
(The unknown variable here being the content on your site, how good it is? How well does it perform?)
Regardless, one common problem with traffic from these sites, it’s very temporary traffic. The high volume will only last a few days… until your item is moved back from the front page.
These visitors will not stay on your site long and most are gone within seconds, never to be seen again. A few may sign up to your newsletter or venture to other areas of your site but not many.
Social bookmark traffic is very fleeting, like customers in the drive-thru section in a fast food restaurant, they grab the content and surf back to the major linking site very quickly and surf on to the next item.
This traffic will behave very differently than organic traffic from the search engines, or from your newsletter traffic or from traffic in your marketing funnels. Much different.
It was unlike getting one of my articles featured in Addme or SiteProNews, where I can easily get 200 or 300 new subscribers in a day. Plus, these visitors are interested in my information and have been exposed to my content (article) before coming to my site.
So there was no comparison; I would take the traffic from these sites any day over traffic from the social bookmark sites. And I would take free organic traffic from the search engines over any other source of traffic.
So the question remains – is social bookmark traffic useless?
First, as I mentioned before, you must realize no traffic is useless; any visitors to your site is a good thing. Without traffic your site is worthless, just a few files sitting on a server in the middle of nowhere.
Obtaining visitors is one of your first objectives as a webmaster. You must get visitors to your site or it’s game over.
The best kind of traffic is traffic coming from organic search, visitors who come from the search engines seeking exactly what you’re offering on your site. These are targeted visitors who will consider your offer, real your information, maybe buy a product or sign-up to your newsletter or follow-up system. They often become repeat visitors to your site. These are your ideal visitors. This is the kind of traffic you want.
Social bookmark/media traffic is different but it does have some saving graces.
Mainly it can help expose your site to millions and help brand your site or business. It can get the word out about your site. Start a buzz.
If you have a site that appeals to the mass market, then these social sites could be an excellent recruiting ground for visitors and traffic.
These social sites are good for another reason; getting your links on all these high traffic, high PR7 and PR8 sites can’t hurt your search engine rankings. Once featured on a site like Digg, your link will appear on many secondary sites around the web, so far 500+ and counting. Monkey see, monkey do. Although it has never been my main ambition to get featured on Fark.com, all these sites do have high PR ranks so from a SEO standpoint it is not necessarily a bad thing.
Since many of these visitors will be using the Firefox browser which has the Alexa toolbar embedded – your site’s traffic rank will increase. Over 50% of the bookmark traffic coming to my site were using the Firefox browser. Alexa’s traffic rankings are not a true picture of the web’s traffic but it’s a good measuring stick, nonetheless.
Google might even consider it when ranking your site. Google basically considers their whole indexing system as a democratic voting structure… sites give a vote by linking to your content; wouldn’t it also be reasonable to assume more traffic means more votes. So wouldn’t getting a lot of traffic or being featured on a site like Digg where the users vote to propel the best content to the front be the ultimate vote.
One strange thing I did notice, for some reason the traffic from Stumbleupon was different. These visitors stayed longer on my site and reacted more like organic traffic. Maybe the Stumbleupon site is of a higher quality and this may have been reflected in the quality of the visitors coming from there. It also reminded me, all traffic from these social media sites can’t be judged with the one brush.
This whole experience also pointed out another important factor; it made me realize how unsuited my content is for the general web surfer or the mainstream web. All my sites and content were planned and organized to first draw in targeted (warmed up) visitors from free organic search and from my online articles.
If I or anyone wanted to take advantage of this social media traffic, you would have to create your site/content to appeal to these surfers and then somehow draw them into your marketing funnels. I don’t know if the majority of the users of these bookmark sites would make good prospects, but my guess is not very likely, the nature of the beast. But it would largely depend on what you’re offering on your site and how well it is suited to these users.
So I am not drawing any conclusions yet.
Hopefully, I will have further chances to study traffic from these social sites and get the long-term effects, especially in regards to my keyword rankings in the search engines before making any final judgments.
For now I will keep an open mind but the jury is still way out whether or not social bookmark traffic is worth the interruption to the daily marketing tasks of your site. Just seems like much ado about nothing.

Web Site Design Planning
Jun 1st
While designing or redesigning a web site the most vital part of the task happens before any graphics or codes are created.
Start by determining the principal goals of your web site. Are you using it to sell your products or services? Maybe it’s planned simply to advertise your offline business, provide support to your existing customers or build your company brand. Whatever the goals are, clearly defining them ahead of time will better guide you in the actual web site design process.
Next, remember that first impressions mean everything. Your Web Site Design must be professional and portray the right image for your business. Most web site surfers decide within seconds of reaching your main web page if they will browse deeper into your site or click away to another. Studies have shown that this decision is usually made based on the appeal of the web site design rather than the text copy. This means that your web site design has to grab their attention and convince them that you’re offering something of value fast.

How do you start building a WordPress site for an already existing website?
Jun 1st
I have a website that has been up and running for some time now, and for numerous reasons I want to replace it with a WordPress site.
So, how do I start building the WordPress site – in a seperate folder from the “public_html” folder? Then when you are ready to move it into the public_html folder, do you have to correct whatever file-paths and link errors?
I am wondering if anyone can suggest a good site or guide to get up to speed on latest standards in web design?
Jun 1st
I used to do websites, almost ten years ago and back then there was a ton of limitations in what you could do – design was a case of working within these constrictions. Now, I believe things have come along way and I just wanted to get caught up with the latest in “no-no”s and what you can’t do. When I was last working I liked iframes but they weren’t totally accepted by everyone. I’m also wondering if people still use plain old vanilla tables…and I know and am comfortable with css…
so if anyone can recommend a decent contemporary guide to what people are doing in good web design these days…let me know!
I should also say that I am super comfortable in photoshop. I am looking for something sort of casual like a blog – i know about the w3 standards sites…but they are sort of lowest common denominator. I want something that’s a bit more, progressive. From lots of web navigation it seems that fonts are rendered much better than they were back in the day – and I am not talking about images with text in them – where to find info on how this is done?
thanks organize!
i wonder why iframes are obsolete – actually i wonder in general why frames never caught on. I particularly liked the idea of keeping navigation in one place…I don’t think anyone bothers anymore but why? did something take their place?
